Self-learning has both pros and cons that impact on the overall development of a person. Though, the issues that drive by self-learning method are made this way of studying and development highly ineffective for any individual. Since when a person carries out self-learning, he/she cannot get an opportunity to interact with others, as they are studying by him or herself, which is not a good aspect of self-learning process. It is because interactions and discussions are important part of learning and development. Without having these social components, an individual cannot overcome confusions that definitely occur in the process of learning and education. As a result, frustration develops in the attitude of a person which does not allow him/her to carry out learning activities by him or herself. Their level of engagement starts to decrease, which is a bad news for their successful development. Most people employing self-learning start with high motivation but as time goes by this motivation decreases and more often than not, students end up giving up all together due to frustration.
Another reason behind the frustration inside an individual during self-learning process is lack of discipline. Since this method of learning gives freedom to a person to decide studying timing and place. That is why an individual sets the entire procedure of learning as per his/her convenience, which should be generated positivity and enthusiasm of learning inside a person. Unfortunately, the actual results are different from this perception, because a person does not follow self-designed schedules due to absence of control that imposes by the instructor. For that reason, the constructive and also consistent learning does not carry out when he/she tries to learn through self-learning method.
The ineffectiveness is further increased when a person does not get feedback on his/her performance and growth from anyone. These feedbacks on the academic progress are presented by instructors, but these instructors are not followed when a person learns himself/herself without any class or training course. Therefore, the continuous feedbacks on the development are not possible to acquire in self-learning system, which makes this studying method less impactful and successful. The people with a need to get detailed knowledge and proven skills cannot meet their goals through self-learning system. This makes individual learning challenging for a person, as feedbacks and reports are important to bring improvements in the learning activities and resources.
Even the identification between right or wrong is impossible to do, because the input of another person i.e. instructor is important to know whether the material is using to study is correct or not. Therefore, the state of confusion never goes away in the process of self-learning. A person tries to overcome these confusions by accessing more material and sources related to the studying subject. Unfortunately, these attempts make self-learning more difficult and hard for a person. Consequently, the evolution and development of an individual becomes slower and in some cases, failure. The tiredness that develops in a person because of back to back confusions in the process of self-learning does not permit him/her to gain fruitful knowledge and useful skills. Thus, self-learning should be used as a supporting option for the personal education and development along with the instructor-based learning system such as one-on-one tutoring.
